What is a neck finish, and how do you match a cap to a bottle?

A neck finish is the shaped top of a bottle or jar — its diameter, its thread or lugs, and its sealing surface — and it is what a cap or pump has to fit. Match a closure by quoting the finish (for example “63 mm lug” or “FEA 15”), not the bottle's volume: two bottles of the same size can have different necks, and one neck can take several closures.

Reading a threaded finish code

Plastic bottles, and the pumps and sprays that go on them, usually carry a two-part code such as 24-410. The first number is the outside diameter of the thread in millimetres. The second is the thread style: 400, 410 and 415 are common styles with progressively taller necks and more turns of thread.

So a 24-410 pump will not seat properly on a 24-400 bottle, even though both are “24 mm”. The sprays and mists range is specified for 20, 24, 25 and 28 mm necks for this reason — output and neck size are quoted together.

Lug finishes and the bead

The glass food jars run from 43 mm to 100 mm lug finish, stocked against the common cap sizes, so a jar can be matched to a closure you already buy rather than the other way round.

Some lug finishes come in a standard and a “with bead” variant — the bead is a raised ring below the thread. Both are held, and it is the detail that decides whether an existing capping line will run the jar. Check which one your capper is set up for before you order.

What to quote when you order closures

  • The finish exactly as it appears on the product page — the catalogue lists it on every reference.
  • The closure type and material: lug, ROPP, screw cap, pump, spray, dropper.
  • The liner, for jars holding creams or foods — it is chosen against what it has to sit on for a year.
  • For pumps and droppers, the bore and the dip-tube length.
  • If you already buy closures, their specification — the bottle is matched to it.

Caps and closures cover 14 mm to 120 mm necks in PP and stainless steel. Caps, pumps and closures supplied with glass are checked against the neck finish before the order ships.
